The Breach

Around two centuries ago, all manner of demons and monsters from the Shadowdark invaded the surface world in an event known as The Breach, killing most of humanity and leaving great wastelands behind them. Their paths of attack remain today, and are known as Pits.
Humanity managed to eventually staunch the flow and take a stand, eventually pushing the invaders back through the Pits to whence they came. Many lives were lost during this war, and many bodies lie scattered, unrecovered, throughout the Pits.
Most of the world is covered in a layer of brownish-grey silt.

The Pits hold all manner of dangers and treasure, and no one knows how deep they go or where they lead. Individuals who go into the pits are known as Crawlers.

There is a series of caravan traders known as The Haj, who know the paths through the wastelands and make their living by roaming and trading between settlements.

The village of Ember is reliant on their team of Crawlers bringing resources up from the Pit to trade for supplies with The Haj.
